Vocal Health Advice

The voice is the original instrument, the most precious.  Your body is the instrument and there are some things you have to keep in mind all the time, not just when you're singing.  It is hard to undo some damage inflicted on it.  Even trained singers run into vocal health problems.  Below are some tips to help avoid overuse:

  1. Sing with your whole body, not just your throat

  2. Think about your posture, not just when singing, but when speaking also

  3. Don't speak in your vocal fry or the "gravelly" region of the voice

  4. Don't sing for long periods of time, and never for more than two hours a day

  5. Don't whisper

  6. Drink water regularly

  7. Don't smoke

  8. Don't drink alcohol

  9. Don't eat unhealthy foods late at night

  10. Drink caffeine in moderation

I have also included a "vocal glossary" that explains some physical terms connected with the voice and has some practice advice also.
