Sample Lesson Plans

Below, I've included lesson plans from lessons I taught during my student teaching placement in Brookline, MA.  At the beginning of each plan, I mark the national and state music standards that are addressed in each lesson.  I also mark areas of the Common Core that are applicable to each lesson.  There are several commonalities to be found in nearly every music class or rehearsal like the use of structure and reading and disecting lyrics for songs.

I write out the learning activities by steps.  Sometimes, when I'm reviewing lesson plans before I teach them, I notice disconnects within an activity and can remediate before the lesson.  After I teach lessons, I write comments in the right-hand column about how the lesson went, some activities and actions I would repeat, and mostly what aspects of the lesson I would remediate.

The Singing Attendance activity in the first and the third grades is something that I want to do with younger students (K-4) in my future jobs. When made part of the routine, the children can sometimes find it comforting and fun.  Even when I used it in the upper grades, some kids who I found to be apathetic in music would ask me, "Ms. Neuberger, are we doing Singing Attendance today? I really like it."

When I'm writing my own curriculum, I plan on incorporating a lot of singing.  Having the children sing many songs beautifully is going to be the cornerstone of my curriculum.

5th chorus and 6th-8th chorus sample lesson plans.  Click for larger, more detailed images.  The warm-up sequence in the 6th-8th chorus lesson I've found to be really successful.  The kids like and it helps their singing!
